The over five week dance of democracy came to a close with the results being declared to the Parliament in the largest democracy in the world. A country with over 800 million registered voters has decided that Narendra Modi would be the new Prime Minister of India. Modi has been on the move for over a year to win the most coveted and most powerful job in India. He has promised a lot and Indians have high expectations from him.
The ground reality would not change with merely a Modi becoming the Prime Minister. It would change only if people change. This is what Modi expects from Indians.
- Stop hiding income to evade taxes
- Stop treating women as commodities
- Stop urinating in public
- Stop littering public spaces
- Stop damaging public property
- Stop gallivanting by saying ‘Pata hai mera baap kaun hai?”
- Stop being a dick that burns women for dowry
- Stop indulging in eve teasing
- Stop being a jackass that does not follow traffic rules
- Stop paying a bribe (Modi should take a leaf out of the AAP experiment in Delhi)
- Stop thinking that the problems of the nation are someone else’s responsibility
- Stop flashing your reserved status even if you are financially well off
- Stop flashing you upper caste label to drive others away from temples and public spaces
- Stop selling your votes for money and inducements
- Stop being biased towards other religions and communities
- Stop being an Indian that you do not want an Indian to be
- Start following rules and laws of the land
- Start respecting women
- Start teaching your kids to respect women
- Start teaching your kids that following rules is a good thing
- Start telling you kids that they cannot run amok on your name
- Start teaching your children that those who litter are bad people
- Start thinking like a global citizen
- Start identifying yourself with the country before religion, community or region
- Start being an Indian that you want an Indian to be
