The entrepreneur is a strange creature. In their previous avatar, the entrepreneur is, usually, the person who moves mountains at their workplace for that pay-check at the end of the month’s toil. This person believes that he is capable of performing tasks better and more efficiently than the crop of traditional business managers. He understands the importance of human resources and it gets to his nerves when resources are treated as commodities, including the said person.
There starts a burning desire (yeah, much beaten phrase) within him to start an organisation that believes in individuals and their capabilities. An organisation that creates products that would the the world by surprise and leave them gasping for more. The seeds of entrepreneurship are hence, sown.
Queen captures this tale of strife and and angst of an entrepreneur in an ornate manner in the voice of Freddie Mercury in the evergreen favourite – I Want To Break Free from 1984. It makes perfect sense to me and it the reason that I share this interpretation with you.
I want to break free
I want to break free
I want to break free from your lies
You’re so self satisfied I don’t need you
I’ve got to break free
God knows, God knows I want to break free
The budding entrepreneur has had it with a life where he toils for a salary and is desperate the break free of the shackles. He states that he does not need to pander to the inflated egos and he has faith in his God that he shall break free one day.
I’ve fallen in love
I’ve fallen in love for the first time
And this time I know it’s for real
I’ve fallen in love yeah
God knows God knows I’ve fallen in love
The love of working to his heart’s content and to make the Earth a better place, make others’ lives easier and to make sure that the vision of an organisation that he envisages to build, has lured him like no other beauty could. He realises that he is in love and in love with the idea of being an entrepreneur.
It’s strange but it’s true
I can’t get over the way you love me like you do
But I have to be sure
When I walk out that door
Oh how I want to be free baby
Oh how I want to be free
Oh how I want to break free
It takes courage, he says, to let go of the comfort of a salary that he gets when working for someone else. But he is determined. He knows that the journey that he is about to embark upon, is not going to be an easy one but he is even more motivated now to break free.
But life still goes on
I can’t get used to living without living without
Living without you by my side
I don’t want to live alone hey
God knows got to make it on my own
So baby can’t you see
I’ve got to break free
He reaches out to the work that he loves and it, in some part, is what he is doing in his current position as an employee. He knows what his strengths are and he states that his God and he alone know how eagerly he wants to make it on his own. His desperation to quit his job transforms into a sense of eagerness and he transcends into a trance to break free.
I’ve got to break free
I want to break free yeah
I want, I want, I want, I want to break free
The message is loud and clear. He is ready to begin the journey for being anointed to the Sainthood of Entrepreneurs. Amen!
